Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has thrown the gauntlet at Apple. But this time the two megs are not fighting for the phone-battle supremacy. There are no Snapdragon or A15 Bionic chips, no touch AMOLED screens, no games, or app stores ... nothing you'd expect from these tech behemoths. Instead, they've joined the new battle for slim wallet dominance. Both companies have launched a sleek number that can hold the most essential cards. Are wallets the next big thing after smartphones? Are tech companies preparing for something much bigger - maybe something that can complement the future smartphones - or replace them altogether? What's the catch?
While metal wallets were originally the brainchild of Ridge, it was GRID who took them to stardom. GRID became the trailblazer with the new premium design and impeccable finish. Suddenly there was a phone that could fit in an Apple showroom next to their flagship devices.
These best metal wallets could comfortably house up to 12 cards without any bulk. Not just that, GRID metal wallets came with the strongest RFID blocking technology. Now, there was a wallet that added tech to protect your money and identity. This was a pivotal moment in the history of wallets.
“Wallets have embraced tech and we're seeing them taking a whole new shape.”
But it's the physical wallet that Apple is eyeing. Following the footsteps of GRID, the tech giant is offering the slimmest of cardholders with a touch of tech to protect the cards inside from skimmers. As you'd expect, the quality and construction are of top quality. The wallet comes with the convenient MagSafe feature which means it'll snap to the back of your phone.
Disappointing Apple: After using the leather wallet for just over a month, the leather started to wear off, lose texture and color making it less than attractive. Unacceptable for the price and the company it comes from.
So, it begs the question, who's next? Maybe the Korean giant Samsung? For now, GRID remains #1 in the game of slim wallets.
Metal Wallets. Defying Norm
If Bohemian Rhapsody was rad and trend-defying, then metal wallets were a tradition-shattering paradigm shift in 2015. Before GRID and Ridge, wallets were made of leather and fabric. They were bifold wallets and zip tops. There was little imagination and no innovation, they all looked like they came from the same mill with different names and price tags. Leather bifold wallets ruled - not because of the wallet design but because of the status of leather. While metal wallets were originally the brainchild of Ridge, it was GRID who took them to stardom. Apple Sniffs Something More
No one sniffs out an opportunity better than the makers of iPhone and Macintosh. Apple already established its digital wallet as the #1 in the game. Aside from holding cards, it can now hold your ID, driving license, and even vaccination certificates. But it's the physical wallet that Apple is eyeing. Xiaomi Joins The Race
The Chinese tech giant is never more than a few steps behind. They're picking up the smell too. Recently the phone makers launched their first slim metal wallet with the exact same tech as GRID. The design is sleek, compact, and offers a premium touch from top to bottom. The slim metal wallet comes with a button that pops out a shallow drawer that can comfortably hold up to six cards. So, it begs the question, who's next? Maybe the Korean giant Samsung? For now, GRID remains #1 in the game of slim wallets.
